I Don't Want to Move!

Has anyone made a move with a teenager?

Teens are experiencing physiological, psychological, and biological changes.
There is so much going on within them on a daily basis, it is almost more than most of them can handle. Compound that with a major move and the typical response is, "Not me. I'm staying here!"

There are a few things to consider as you prepare to make a move. Your teen will feel that this is a tragedy, that this decision is taking away all of their control. Female teenagers are the most affected by moving, followed by high school seniors. Since they have become more independent, we tend to think teens will handle the move like a grown-up.

Their thoughts and feelings are serious; this move will cause them some emotional trauma. Be sensitive to those feelings and try to be patient with their resistance to the move. It is natural for them to go through these emotions.

Here are some suggestions on how to help teens prepare for a move:

· Provide them with information about their new area and have them search the web
· Make them feel a part of the move; discuss their feelings and emotions
· Visit the school, find out about credits required for graduation and the dress code
· Get them acclimated to the school and their new community
· Get a copy of the school newspaper to learn about activities
· Encourage your teen to become involved in extra curricular activities; this helps them make new friends with similar interests
· Hand-carry a copy of their transcripts

Create a budget that allows your teen to stay in contact with his/her old friends by phone or email. Free calling on cell phones during the weekend can really help as well as instant messaging.
