Leaving the Fort: Tips for Protecting Your Home While You´re Away RISMEDIA-"On the road again" seems to be the summertime anthem, indicating that the vacation season is here. However, fun in the sun means being responsible and ensuring the safety of your family and your home. Peter McMurtrie, chief claims officer for Grange Insurance, offers up some advice for safe traveling and preparation.According to McMurtrie, a few simple precautions made before you leave the house can ensure a much happier return. "The best way to ruin an enjoyable vacation is to come home to preventable problems," McMurtrie says. Before an extended getaway, McMurtrie advises to: - Give a trip itinerary and emergency numbers to a trusted friend or neighbor. "It may seem like a lot to get done before a trip, but the peace of mind is far more important than anything while you´re away," McMurtrie says. Before hitting the road, have your car thoroughly serviced and filled with gas, and inspect your car safety kit to make sure it has all the necessities: water, jumper cables, flares, flashlights, equipment to change a tire and a first aid kit. It´s also a great idea to pack non-perishable snacks, food and juice. Now you´re ready to buckle up and go! "These few simple precautions can make all the difference between coming back to a secure home or returning to a mess of troubles," McMurtrie says. "So head to that open road and return home safely." |
