Block Watch
Here is some helpful information about security in your neighborhood.
Have you ever considered starting a Block Watch program in your neighborhood, or do you already have one in place? Block Watch is an international program that encourages neighbors to work together in their community. Block Watch can significantly help reduce crime--and the fear of crime--through community policing, crime-prevention services and neighborhood residential education.
While the original focus and ongoing success of Block Watch is to help prevent and reduce residential burglaries and break-ins, its value has proven equally great in dealing with such problems as drug/party houses, gang activity, vandalism, malicious mischief and theft. Together neighbors can also develop mutual understanding about parking, schedules and events on their block.
How Do You Start a Block Watch?
All support services for Block Watch are provided by your local police station. Here's how to get started:
* Contact your neighbors. Ask them if they would be interested in meeting. Your needs and interests should match your unique area and your neighbors. Stay flexible regarding meeting locations, meeting frequency, topics, size, etc. * Call your police station to set up a time and place for your first meeting. You may request a volunteer educator (or ambassador) to run this meeting. * Notify interested neighbors. Once you and the volunteer have decided on a meeting time and place, let your neighbors know. The volunteer can help develop a flyer for you to distribute, or you can call each of your neighbors directly. * Attend the first meeting. The volunteer will help people feel at ease, explain the value of Block Watch, and address particular interests and concerns they have about the neighborhood. The group will fill out the "map" ? a list of names, addresses and phone numbers that you'll distribute to each member. A schedule and topics for future meetings can also be determined.
